VT station!!

Yippee!!
VT station (can never call it CST!!) is a World Heritage Site!!
It was high time that the value of this place was acknowledged!
It is one place where thousands pass through each day, but few notice its beauty and grandeur. The place is simply impressive from any angle, at any time!!

Hope the World Heritage Site status makes the upkeep better and the commuters treat it with a little more respect!

I'm Back!

Phew!!! Work!!
Back after a long time!

Ah, Love! Could Thou and I with Fate Conspire
-- Omar Khayyam  (trans. Edward Fitzgerald)

Ah, Love! could thou and I with Fate conspire
To grasp this sorry Scheme of Things entire!
Would not we shatter it to bits - and then
Re-mould it nearer to the Heart's Desire!

Aanchal Mein.....

From the movie "Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon", starring Joy Mukherjee and Asha Parekh, this song sung by Mohd. Rafi brings back many memories........

Aanchal mein sajaa lenaa kaliyaan,
Zulfon mein sitaare bhar lenaa
Aise hii kabhii jab shaam dhale,
Tab yaad hamein bhii kar lenaa

Aayaa thaa yahaan begaanaa saa,
Chal duungaa kahiin diivaanaa saa,
Diivaane kii khaatir tum koi,
Ilzaam naa apane sar lenaa
Aise hii kabhii jab shaam dhale,
Tab yaad hamein bhii kar lenaa

Rastaa jo mile anjaan koi
Aa jaae agar tuufaan koi
Apane ko akelaa jaan ke tum
Aankhon mein na aansuu bhar lenaa
Aise hii kabhii jab shaam dhale,
Tab yaad hamein bhii kar lenaa.

Haunting Melody!!!

Haunting Melody!!!

"White Flag"

-Dido

I know you think that I shouldn't still love you,
Or tell you that.
But if I didn't say it, well I'd still have felt it
where's the sense in that?

I promise I'm not trying to make your life harder
Or return to where we were

Well I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

I know I left too much mess and
destruction to come back again
And I caused nothing but trouble
I understand if you can't talk to me again
And if you live by the rules of "it's over"
then I'm sure that that makes sense

Well I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

And when we meet
Which I'm sure we will
All that was there
Will be there still
I'll let it pass
And hold my tongue
And you will think
That I've moved on....

Well I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

"To Sleep"

Aaah to sleep!!!

"To Sleep"

      -- Statius

What is the charge, young god, what have I done
Alone to be denied, in desperate straits,
Epitome of Calm, your treasure, Sleep?

Hush holds enmeshed each herd, fowl, prowling beast;
The trees, capitulating, nod to aching sleep;
The raging floods relinquish their firm roar;
The heavy sea has ceased and the oceans curl
Upon the lap of land to sink and rest.

The moon has now in seven visits seen

My wild eyes staring; seven stars of dawn
And twilight have returned to me
And sunrise, transient witness of distress,
Has in compassion sprayed dew from her whip.

Where is the strength I need?  It would defeat

The consecrated Argus, thousand-eyed
Despite the watch that one part of him keeps,
Nerves taught, on guard relentlessly.

Oh Sleep, some couple, bodies interlocked,

Must shut you from their night-long ecstasy;
So come to me.  I issue no demand
That you enfold mine eyes with your wings--
Let all the world, more fortunate, beg that.

Your wand-tip's mere caress, your hovering form

Poised lightly on tiptoe: that is enough.

What We might Be, What We Are!

Another Good one!

'What We Might Be, What We Are'
      -- X. J. Kennedy

If you were a scoop of vanilla
And I were the cone where you sat,
If you were a slowly pitched baseball
And I were the swing of a bat,

If you were a shiny new fishhook
And I were a bucket of worms,
If we were a pin and a pincushion,
We might be on intimate terms.

If you were a plate of spaghetti
And I were your piping-hot sauce,
We'd not even need to write letters
To put our affection across.

But you're just a piece of red ribbon
In the beard of a Balinese goat
And I'm a New Jersey mosquito.
I guess we'll stay slightly remote.

The White Rose

This one stayed behind long after i had read a particular issue of Reader's Digest. Like it for its sheer simplicity.

The White Rose
 -- John Boyle O'Reilly

The red rose speaks of passion,
And the white rose breathes of love;
Oh, the red rose is a falcon,
And the white rose is a dove.
But I send you a cream-white rosebud,
With a flush on its petal tips;
For the love that is purest and sweetest
Has a kiss of desire on the lips.

Sit

Loved this poem the first time i read it. Simple and forceful at the same time!!!!

Sit
-- Vikram Seth

Sit, drink your coffee here; your work can wait awhile.
You're twenty-six, and still have some of life ahead.
No need for wit; just talk vacuities, and I'll
Reciprocate in kind, or laugh at you instead.

The world is too opaque, distressing and profound.
This twenty minutes' rendezvous will make my day:
To sit here in the sun, with grackles all around,
Staring with beady eyes, and you two feet away.

First Post!!!

.....of books, poems, quotes, songs, music, movies & things that interest me!!!

And mainly because inspite of being a jabberwocky, my friends think I dont speak my mind enough!!

I think my first post should be the poem that got me interested in poetry....

This one is best heard in Andy Garcia's voice, on the motion picture soundtrack of "Il Postino".

Tonight I Can Write
- Pablo Neruda  (translated by W.S. Merwin)

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.

Write, for example:
"The night is shattered,
And the blue stars shiver in the distance."
The night wind revolves in the sky and sings.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.
I loved her, and sometimes she loved me too.

Through nights like this when I held her in my arms.
I kissed her again and again under the endless sky.

She loved me and sometimes I loved her too.
How could one not have loved her great, still eyes.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.
To think that I do not have her.
To feel that I have lost her.

To hear the immense night, still more immense without her.
And the verse falls to the soul like dew to the pasture.

What does it matter that my love could not keep her.
The night is shattered and she is not with me.

This is all.
In the distance, someone is singing.
In the distance, my soul is not satisfied that it has lost her.

My sight searches for her, as though to go to her.
My heart looks for her, and she is not with me.

The same night whitening the same trees.
We, of that time, are no longer the same.

I no longer love her, that's certain, but how I loved her.
My voice tried to find the wind to touch her hearing.

Another's. She will be another's.
Like my kisses before.
Her voice, her bright body. Her infinite eyes.

I no longer love her, that's certain, but maybe I love her.
Love is so short, forgetting is so long.

Because through nights like this when I held her in my arms
my soul is not satisfied that it has lost her.

Though this be the last pain that she makes me suffer
and these the last verses that I write for her.
